Memoria Day means different things for different people.  For many people, Memorial Day is the unofficial beginning of summer.  With various festivals, parties, picnics and outdoor cookouts, the origins and true meaning seem to have been lost.  This Memorial Day weekend, let's not forget to remember our loved ones that have left us and those that have made the ultimate sacrifice in our behalf.

One of my favorite activities is attending the Greek Heritage Festival at the Greek Heritage Church of the Annunciation.  Built in 1912 and located in what has become the very trendy Tremont neighborhood, this is the oldest Greek Orthodox Church in the

Robert Mondavi, the patriarch of the Mondavi wine family passes away this morning at age 94.  Mondavi who is widely considered responsible for the success of the California wine industry symbolized premium California wine with an upscale lifestyle.

Born in June 1913 in Minnesota, Mondavi had three siblings including his brother Peter.  Robert was 10, when the family moved to California after father Cesare started a business in the area.  After graduating from Stanford University, he began his career in the wine industry working for his father's winery, Sunny St. Helena, a winery.  For Full Article ...

It's Mother's Day ......

If you give it some thought, you have to wonder.  In the Christian denominations, the holiday period between Thanksgiving and Christmas takes up a good portion of eight weeks and Lent, evolves over six weeks.  For individuals observing Judaism, the holiest and most solemn day of the year, Yom Kippur is actually embraced over two days.  Horse racing's Triple Crown takes place over several Saturday's.  Baseball's World Series takes the up a good portion of the entire month of October.

So why is it, that Mother's Day is observed for only a single day?  For Full Article ......

In Vino Veritas .........  In Wine there is Truth!

To use the term, “working” on this issue would be a misrepresentation, as from start to finish has been a pleasure of immense proportions that I can not describe.  It has offered me the opportunity to meet and spend a lot of time with a great group of people, which has enhanced my life.  In the essence of disclosure, I consider Thomas Arvid a very good friend; however I am quite sure he makes each person that he touches, feel the exact same way.  I have the utmost of respect and admiration for not only Arvid the artist, but Thomas Arvid the person, and much of what you experience in this issue of Wine Savant will reflect that. ..............  I want to thank the wineries and the people behind them who gave of their time and shared their stories.  Thank you to everyone I have met and spoken to in my research, and most of all, a special thank you to Thomas Arvid and his family for making this issue possible.   For Full Editorial and a Note from Arvid .....

Southwest Michigan - A Sense of Place   by Ron Edwards, Master Sommelier

Terroir is often spoken of when one finds a wine that seems to evoke images of the land of its birth.  That undercurrent of flavor that is so individualistic to a region or a vineyard that the common thread of flavor has become the identity of the wine itself.  When one thinks of this sense of place that certain wines show so clearly, examples come fairly quickly.

We think of the roasted fruit and iron ore of Graves, the smell of slate and peach in Rheingau Riesling, the bacon fat of great Côte-Rôtie or maybe the chalkiness of Chablis.  Are we left only to think of Europe when we contemplate the regions that have flavor profiles that are defined bottle after bottle?  Surely there must be individuality to our own vineyards in this country and even in this state.

The individuality of a vineyard or vineyard area, the terroir, is multifaceted and deserves some explanation.  The factors that cause vineyard uniqueness are the soil type, the elevation above sea level, the inclination of the land to the sun, the compass direction to which the land faces, the average daily temperature during the growing season, average rainfall and when it falls, humidity, the cumulative hours of sunshine during the growing season, proximity of maritime influence and the intervention of man.  For the Full Story .......
A Season to Celebrate  by Loretta Paganini, Wine Savant Food Editor

Every season has a king.  Summer has ripe juicy fruits, spring has tender vegetables and fall has a whole harvest of flavors.  How about winter?  When planning a winter feast, what should be the reigning ingredients?   Modern technology and hydroponics farming have made even blueberries a winter possibility.  But why try to use a summer ingredient that tastes like cardboard in the middle of winter?  Embrace winter and take advantage of its mysterious ingredients. Succulent root vegetables like turnips, rutabagas, parsnip, celeriac root, Jerusalem artichokes or gorgeous winter flowers like broccoli, cabbage, kale, and cauliflower or romantic chestnuts are in abundance. Glamorous winter fruits like cranberries, blood oranges, grapes, kiwi, persimmons or pomegranates are pure perfection.

Winter recipes are rich and hearty and perfect for your holiday entertaining.  This is the time of the year to deck the hall and celebrate the spirit of the Season. This is the time to send out annual Holiday Party invitations to fam
ily, friends and business associates.  An essential key to successful entertaining is to know your season.  Winter is cold.  That fact is inescapable. Use that to your hosting advantage by creating a warm and welcoming environment inside your home.  Use candles and soft lighting to create a warm glow throughout your rooms.  Decorate with rich fabric pillows and throws made of velvet, chenille, or even faux-fur to further your cozy cottage feel.   As guests enter your home, offer them a warm mug of spiced rum, spiced wine, or Russian tea to warm the red chill off their noses.  To create a  festive mood arrange decorations throughout your home, even the guest bathroom.   Set plates of appetizers in your kitchen, this will make your guests feel right at home. Check the FOOD & RECIPES section for some of Loretta's recipes. 10 Days in Spain  by Jamie Boyd

Pinch the hard turtle toe and eat the rubbery black leg part.  Take a toothpick and pull out the slimy creature, eating it all in one bite. Finish platefuls of these barnacles and snails with enthusiasm.  No, it's not a segment from the show,
Fear Factor; it's just another gourmet experience from my ten-day trip to Spain in May.  As wine buyer for West Point Market in Akron, I was one of thirty people across the United States
accompanying importer Jorge Ordonez on a tour of wine regions in his homeland.  Known by those who had gone before me as “The Ordonez Death March” because of the grueling schedule (4,000 Kilometers by bus, staying at a different hotel each night).  I had apprehensions that this may not be the trip I'd hoped for.   But as I reviewed my daily journal, I realize I wouldn't trade that crazy experience for the world.  For the Full Story .....

The Life & Works of Thomas Arvid  by John Ney

I first saw the art of Thomas Arvid several years ago at a gallery in St. Augustine, Florida.  As with most people who see his art for the first time, I assumed it was a photograph.Intrigued, I picked up several pieces of promotional literature and brought them home with me.  Occasionally, I would go back to those promotional materials and admire the work and the detail.  Of course, the subject of the art was something I could relate to so I eventually visited his web site and became a regular visitor.

Amazingly enough, I didn't make the effort to visit an Arvid Gallery near my home, but over the next few years returned to that same gallery in St. Augustine several more times to satisfy my curiosity.  Each time, I would pick up another one or two of those cards promoting an individual piece of work.  Having visited that gallery so many times now, I was obviously on their mailing list and I'm quite sure mistaken by more than one person on their staff as a vagrant as I had spent so much time hanging out there.  About a year ago, I received a promotional mailing announcing an appearance at the gallery by Thomas Arvid. Not being able to make the trip to Florida during that time frame, I was “Jonesing” in a major way!  For the Full Story .......

F A C T O R F I C T I O N   -  A Wine Artist is Born!

The question has been asked so many times by so many.  How did he get his start in painting?  This is a legitimate question of any great artist, and it takes on an entirely new significance when the artist is self trained, having possessed no formal training.  When the story is told and repeated so frequently, it becomes “urban legend,” with very few even remembering the beginning.  Well I'm here to remind  you ... It all started in the streets of the “inner city” of
Detroit.   For the Full Story......
Is it the Real Thing?

For every upscale consumer good that invokes luxury, you will find that there is a matching counterfeit produced, most often in sweatshops in China.  The most common are fake Rolex watches and Coach purses that are sold at a fraction of the genuine item's cost by both street vendors operating out of a brief case or trunk of a car and unscrupulous businessmen operating from what is seemingly a reputable business retailing those products.

Thomas Arvid's work is not immune from these counterfeiters and confiscations are occurring with increasing frequency.

Silver Oak - The Flagship of the Arvid Portfolio  by John Ney

Oakville, California ,or as more commonly known Oakville Crossing, is in the heart of NapaValley on the infamous Highway 29.  Just east of the highway is Silver Oak Cellars, the “House that Cabernet built.”  In the grand scheme of the wine business, it is considered a small winery, yet the philosophy and commitment to excellence of its founders, has placed Silver Oak Cellars firmly as a role model in modern day winemaking.

Founded in 1972 by Ray Duncan and the late Justin Meyer.  Duncan, an Oil & Gas entrepreneur from Colorado, is clearly a visionary  For the Full Story ......

Opus One -America's Bordeaux  by John Ney

In the heart of NapaValley, just north of Oakville Crossing off Highway 29, is the Opus One Winery, literally rising out of the earth as if being raised by Dionysus, the Greek God of Wine.  The 80,000 square foot winery is as magnificent as the wine itself and a befitting tribute to its founders.  The building materials and architectural style reflect the founding partners and the wine that they produce.  Elegant and subtle is the image that is projected with this combination of California and Classic European materials used in construction.

However, Opus One didn't start out this way.Founded by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, owner of Château Mouton Rothschild, and Robert Mondavi, For the Full Story

Joseph Phelps - Insignia

One of the most recent focals of Thomas Art is Insignia, produced by Joseph Phelps Vineyards.  The NapaValley winery founded in 1972 is located in Spring Valley near St. Helena, not far from the former Christian Brothers Winery that is now home to the Culinary Institute of America.

Insignia's 1974 vintage was released in 1978 and was at the forefront of the now very popular trend of bottling wines produced utilizing a combination of the five varietals traditionally used in Bordeaux.  This was taken a step further by marketing the product as a proprietary label instead of a varietals name such as the great Chateaus of France do with their famous Bordeaux.  Now Insignia is forever celebrated in the Arvid work “Right Place, Right Time” which debuted earlier this year.

Producing a wine as outstanding as Insignia consistently with every vintage is not an easy task.  For the Full Story ......

Far Niente - “Best Case Scenario”

“Best Case Scenario” - it is one of my favorite pieces of Arvid's work.  The wood crate of bottles laid down for storage is so unique in its simplicity.  Inside of that wood crate are bottles of Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon.  Like all of the wines in Arvid's work, there is a story behind the painting.

For Far Niente, the Oakville California producer of Ultra Premium wines, it all started far from NapaValley, in Oklahoma.Gil Nickel, born in 1939, graduated from OklahomaStateUniversity in 1961.  After a military tour in Vietnam, Gil eventually returned to Oklahoma.  There, he worked in his family's commercial nursery business with his older brother John, nurturing it.  While like its product, the company grew, and grow it did to the point it was one of the largest wholesaler nurseries in the entire U.S.  In 1976, at the age of 37, Gil handed over operations of the nursery to his brother and traveled to California with the dream of making wine.  Gil enrolled in the University of California's Davis Viticulture program.  For anyone interested in studying viticulture in the United States, Davis is the place to be.  After graduating in 1979, with the support of his family, he purchased a dilapidated old stone winery of mammoth proportions, with the intent to restore it, and Far Niente was back in business.   For the next three years, Gil managed the restoration of the nearly 100 year old winery.  For the Full Story ......

Dominus Estates

Of all the wines of Arvid, the story of Dominus is the most enchanting, filled with enough history to write a novel.  Built on one of the oldest and most historical vineyards in California, Napanook Vineyards.  Dominus is located on the west side of Highway 29, near the community of Yountville, on the “foothills” of the
Mayacamas Mountains.  Yountville's namesake, George Yount, was the first known owner of the property and is believed to have planted vines in 1836, which would make it the first vineyard in NapaValley.  Yount sold the property in 1850 to Charles Harper, whom little is known about.  Since Harper, the land has been bought and sold several times.  One owner was California politician Hugh M. LaRue, a man of French ancestory whose family dates back to one of the earliest American settlers.Mr. LaRue was an early pioneer in “rootstock” and other horticulture interests.

Another vineyard owner was John Daniel, who after graduating from Stanford took over Inglenook from his great-uncle Gustave Niebaum, who raised him.  Daniel owned Inglenook from 1931 to 1964 and produced Cabernet Sauvignon of unparalleled quality.  Daniel purchased Napanook Vineyards in 1946 to secure its top quality grapes for the Cabernet Sauvignon at Inglenook that he is famous for.  Daniel sold Inglenook in 1964 and after a couple of corporate owners, is now the home of Niebaum-Coppola.  For the Full Story ........

Groth Vineyards - Celebrates Our 20th Year

Groth Vineyards, an appropriate name as that is the way it all started.  When Dennis and Judy Groth purchased the 121-acre Oakcross Vineyard from Jerry Jensen, that's all there was, a vineyard, no winery, just a vineyard, barn and a farmhouse.  The land was previously leased by Silver Oaks' Justin Meyer and Ray Duncan.  This vineyard though was like a thoroughbred race horse with the right bloodline.  Prime Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were planted from 1974 to 1978 by Duncan and Meyer, as Dennis Groth refers to them “Masters.”  It had a history of producing grapes that evolved into outstanding wine.  Like test driving a car, the Groths wouldn't commit to the purchase until tasting what this vineyard could produce, and the Reserve Cabernet produced by neighboring winery Villa Mt. Eden sold them on this vineyard.

Natives of the San Francisco Bay Area, Dennis and Judy Groth married in 1961.  The couple have three children, a daughter Suzanne and a son Andrew who are both still involved in the business, and second daughter Elizabeth.Dennis, a public accountant by trade, became a partner at Arthur Young & Co. and then moved onto the consumer electronics company Atari in San Jose where, as the Chief Financial Officer, helped transform the startup firm to a two billion dollar giant.  While at Atari, Dennis and Judy purchased the Oakcross property.  Having spent five years at the electronics giant and overseeing the sale of Atari in 1984, Dennis retired from the conventional business world and made the commitment to becoming a gentlemen farmer.  For the Full Story ......

Princess For A Day: The Julie Dalton Story

I first learned of Julie Dalton while having lunch with Thomas Arvid.  He explained the surprise that Francie Dalton had coordinated for her niece, taking place this weekend.  The story of this 29-year-old woman from Baltimore who is self-proclaimed to be “Thomas Arvid's Biggest Fan” intrigued me.  After moving into her first apartment, she chose to invest in her first two Arvid pieces before purchasing any furniture.  As highly as I regard Thomas, I thought, “the real story is about this girl.”

THE AGONY AND THE ECSTACY - A Story of Love Lost and Found  by Francie Dalton

I'm glad you weren't there.

It was painful.  Remorse was visible in her eyes; soreness of spirit so permeated her story that it seemed to creep along my skin and squeeze repeatedly at my heart.  I had seen her manifest hurt before, but this was a new kind of pain, and I admit to being surprised.  My then 26-year-old niece had fallen in love - intensely so - and had forced herself to walk away.

As I listened to her tell me about it, I remember being mesmerized. For the Full Story .......

I Wish They All Could Be California ...Wines  by Julie Dalton

“Art is the accomplice of love.Take away love and there is no art.”     -Remy de Gourmant

I think what made me fall madly in love with Thomas Arvid's work is that he paints the wines that make my heart skip a beat when I think about them.  There are many wines in his work that I've never tasted, but there are many that I have.  The wines from California are the ones that I most identify with.  Here's why.

The tannin.  That carpety, stick to your teeth kind of feeling that's left in your mouth after you swirl, sniff, slurp and swallow.  Big.Dark.Heavy.  Intense. Tough. Rich. Bold. Opaque.  Concentrated. I love that first smell of a California Cabernet right when air penetrates it for the first time since its bottling.  The essence of oak, black fruit and alcohol diffuses up and tingles your nose.

I'm trying to remember when my true preference for California wines began to shine through.I was in college - I don't think it was a particular event or experience.

I think it just had to be exposure.Just taste, taste, taste.  And keep tasting, tasting, tasting.I take advantage of every possible opportunity to taste.  Even if I think I won't like it. You never know what kind of surprise is lurking inside of a bottle. For the Full Story ......

Ever attend a professional cooking class?  by Susan Romine

You may consider yourself a pretty fair cook; one that can whip up rather impressive dishes and entertain with the best of your peers.  But I promise you, a night with Loretta at one of her culinary cooking classes, and even the most accomplished cooks consider it a learning experience.  Loretta Paganini absolutely defines the epitomy of a multi-tasker.  You've seen nothing until you've seen her put together a fabulous meal like she does at her cooking classes.

At her school one night in September, a group of people attended Loretta's Taste of Italy night, feasting on Shrimp Scampi, Italian Wedding Soup, Linguine with White Clam Sauce, Chicken Cacciatora, Cavatelli Arrostiti (with homemade pasta), and Cannoli Alla Siciliana (my mouth still waters over these).  Although Loretta provides the recipes to her attendees, you still had to make notes on her recipes because she does a lot of things the “Paganini way” - which is what makes her dishes absolutely “to die for.” Check out the FOOD & RECIPES section for some of Loretta's recipes.  For the Full Story ......

From the Michigan Vineyard ...  by Donald Coe, President of WineMichigan and Managing Partner Blackstar Farms Winery, Suttons Bay, Michigan

Michigan wineries have been working the issue of direct shipping with the media, public and the Legislature since the US Supreme Court decision in Heald vs. Granholm.

The Court made it clear that the Michigan Legislature could legislate but not discriminate.  The choice then for the Legislature is to “level up” (allow wineries from out-of-state to ship directly to Michigan consumers) or to “level down” (take away the existing rights of Michigan wineries to ship to Michigan consumers).  Continued shipments to consumers and retail accounts are only a fraction of one percent of the 7 million case Michigan wine market, but amount to an average of 30% of sales for small Michigan wineries.  Michigan consumers and overwhelming media editorials favor leveling up.Michigan Beer and Wine Wholesalers convinced the House to pass legislation allowing a very limited allowance of 500 cases of direct shipments for wineries.  The same legislation then took away Michigan wineries existing rights to sell directly to retail accounts.  This would be disastrous for the emerging Michigan wineries who have mustered support in the Senate for a negotiated settlement with the wholesalers   For the Full Story .....

Protect That Investment!

The wines portrayed in Arvid's art are unequivocally among the premier brands of wine in the world.  Experiencing these wines is not something the average person does frequently.  However making the decision to purchase any of these wines is a “no-brainer.”Properly stored, these wines become an investment, just waiting for you to seize the moment to enjoy them. You don't have to wait for that perfect moment or a special occasion to enjoy these wines, as the simple act of sharing these wines with friends makes it a special occasion. None of these products are inexpensive by any stretch of the imagination.  Among these, Silver Oak's Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the least expensive with an average retail price of $100 a bottle depending on your locale.  As you browse the labels, the price of these wines continue to escalate through Insignia, to Opus One, on to the Great Bordeauxs of France such as Chateau Haut-Brion, all similarly priced at about $200 a bottle, on up, depending on the vintage and retailer.

I'm a believer that these wines are to be shared, and several people could easily consume multiple bottles.  However, if you choose to enjoy these wines with one special friend or even by yourself, you may choose to save the remainder of an opened bottle for another day.

Once that cork is pulled, the clock starts ticking, time and oxygen are not the wine's friends.  Replacing the cork and refrigerating the wine will slow down the inevitable demise of your investment, but don't plan on leaving town for that business trip or vacation and expect the wine to live up to your memory of a few days before.  More than likely, you will be adding a little extra-virgin olive oil in the bottle and using it as a salad dressing.  For the Full Story ......
